Interview: 10 questions
1. When did you start making music, what is/was your motivation to do it?
I started at about 15/16 years old, playin guitar , tryin to play Neil Young songs. After that, I started in a folk band as a violin & guitar player but found in love with Jimi Hendrix, bass guitar & fuzz pedal so the folk band became crazy with plenty fuzzbass stuff.
The motivation for startin music was to try to recreate songs & music i loved.
Motivation for makin music now is experimentation in sound, tryin to get the music in my head out of it.
I need to compose music.
it can be geo acoustic or rythm music but I need to arrange vibrations i feel / I live with in multiple ways,
Motivation is to look for Earth music, a music of the earth , that gathers electricity & natural elements.
A music with no specific style, a music that gathers musicians from different places in the world worried about humanism, ecology, political problems, a music inspired by wind ( geo acoustic drones ) & earth ( percussions & bass).
2. Tell me something about your living environment and the musical education.
I work as a sound producer (music, commercials, cartoons …).
that enables me to have a recording studio where I can work for my stuff, when the studio is not booked.
Never been to a music school, just learned some F key muscial scores so I can work as a bass player for different kind of music.
Started working in studio 20 years ago, so I learned as others by touching new magicals tools like first samplers S1000, Cubase on Atari …
3.Is making music your profession? What is the context in which you practice music nowadays?
My profession is sound producer so I m working on music but also on sound & voices.
Don t know if this profession will exist tomorrow due to a decline in quality & time in sessions, mix …!
I work mainly in rec studio. Not enough gigs ( last one 1 year ago ).
4. How do you compose or create music or sound? Have you certain principles, use certain styles etc?
Sometimes everything is very clear in my head at the beginning, & I just try to recreate that in sounds,
sometimes I just begin with a rough idea of a single part & I try to add some ideas all other.
Like a painter I like to combine multiple layers, many many … even if sometimes at the end there ‘s just the premier plan ( front rank ?).
Main principles are : work & Space.
Work : so I can experiment different style or no style on an idea. (add more & more tracks, try different tempos, different chords…) even if sometimes I return to the 1st basic idea at the end.
Space : Stereo is not just L & R its also the distance between the ears to certain sounds deep in a mix.
I work a lot on different spaces, I like the mix to be large & deep with many layers, even if maybe there will be just very few listeners that will listen to that little layer or instrument very far & deep in the music. As a listener when I love a music, I listen to it many many times, & I like to be impressed biy a smallthing I didnt notice before, so as a composer I work in that direction.
5. Tell me something about the instruments, technical equipment or tools you use?
I use Protools, I used it as a magical tape, I record quicly 2 or 3 takes then cut the bad things but never quantization or retuning.
MackieD8Bsound board,Neuman U87 mike, hardware (Lexicon reverb, Neve preamp, Wess eq …).
But thats just tools,
I v been workin on cubase Atari for many years, S1000 sampler is still there.
When I work on geo acoustic creations ( outdoor in the wind) I use microphones & guitars I can get & protools or Adat machines or just Dat recorder or Handy recorder.
Instruments
Basses are always Musicman,Lado & stick Chapman.
I like when guitarists come with very old guitars.
I like to use percussions from everywhere & also little objects, rythms on guitars body, footsteps on wood, drums sticks …
I don t use synthezisers no more , i prefer to create drones & layers in different chords with my geo acoustic elements ( guitars & basses played by the wind) its more lively.
6. What are the chances of New Media for the music production in general and you personally?
Chance to have more contacts directly from musician to listener & vice versa.
Chance to invent new way of producing music.
Personally, I m working on a “People” site, it will be the continuation of the song “People” (short version for free on the site) on a previous cd where 200 people came to participate (extract “6 billion ways to be a human, nobody can say which is the right one” + a list of different tribes & cultures from all around the world).
the idea is to propose the song on the net & everybody will be able to add his voice on the music, his translation, the name of his country or tribe or village and so on.
A kind of humanist song without any end.
7. How about producing and financing your musical productions?
Me & Cipaudio studio are self supporting. We are not big cd sellers, I think that my work is very close to the work of a painter, I want the master to be The Creation, no matter if we sell & thousand or just few copies.
My last work is just One Copy,Unique. It s a 30′ tune made for an exhibition, 2 Cd’s playing at the same time on 4 loudspeakers, you can t get it on 1 cd.
8. Do you work individually as a musician/soundartist or in a group or collaborative?
If you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
I work mainly individually for composing, but last gigs were under the name of the band ” Earth Link”. I like to work with other musicians, everybody give more options on the arrangments.
9. Is there any group, composer, style or movement which has a lasting influence on making music?
I listen to a lot of different music
Influences are
Wind & Drums ( big ones like Japanese Taikos, Native american pow wow drums, spanish tambores, Techno …)
10. What are your future plans or dreams as a soundartist or musician?
Continue !
a dvd with Bass & Drums music with pictures of poles !
a new version of Vent de Guitares on a dvd.
My dream is to work with Mongol throat singers, polynesian percussionists, Australian aboriginals, wind everywhere.
My dream is to have more work with music Not especially on c d but in exhibitions, movies …
My dream is to succeed in my different projects of sound sculptures.
