Interview:10 questions

1. When did you start making music, what is/was your motivation to do it?
I began making music when I was in college, playing guitar, singing and composing with the rockband semes. Then I moved on from there with both electroacoustic and mixed music.

2. Tell me something about your living environment and the musical education.
My living environment is made of alps and cities, of rattle and hum, of visual and sounding arts.
Besides learning guitar and singing, I followed a musical training at the french Conservatoire of Aubervilliers – La Courneuve.
My PhD. in musical acoustics at Pierre&Marie Curie University of Paris made me much aware of urban sound ambiences.

3. Is making music your profession? What is the context in which you practice music nowadays?
My profession is making sound art: electroacoustic music, mixed works, sound installations, sound design…
Besides, I’m teaching sound perception at the Conservatoire of Paris.

4. How do you compose or create music or sound? Have you certain principles, use certain styles etc?
My work focuses on the question of the meaning that is revealed or suggested by sounds, and more particularly on the perceptive limit between the natural sound object – for instance the spoken voice – and the unheard musical object – the same spoken voice, distorted until it becomes a new instrumental sound.

5. Tell me something about the instruments, technical equipment or tools you use?
My instruments are the soundscapes, the voices and various musical instruments.
My tools are MOTU Digital Performer combined with AAS Tassman and INA GRM Tools to create both music and sound works.

6. What are the changes of New Media for the music production in general
and you personally?

New Media contribute to an improved ability and facility for sculpting sounds and for communicating them with other actors or spectactors.

7. How about producing and financing your musical productions?
My work is generated through a combination of artistic commissions, contests and calls for works.
Most sound works are produced by myself.

8. Do you work individually as a musician/soundartist or in a group or collaborative?
Both for different projects.
If you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
I love both, the difference consists in a more or less introspective work and more or less communication during composition…

9. Is there any group, composer, style or movement which has a lasting influence on making music?
Luc Ferrari and Pierre Schaeffer, The Rolling Stones and Kat Onoma, Alberto Giacometti and Mark Rothko, Tortoise and Gastr del Sol, Samuel Beckett and James Joyce, Tom Waits and John Cage…

10. What are your future plans or dreams as a soundartist or musician?
