Interview 10 questions

1. When did you start making music, what is/was your motivation to do it?
I know it may sound quite pretentious, but I think the very first reason that brought me into music was the need, the urge to listen to music that I never had chance to listen before. So, I guess that if there was a musician around (I’m sure there was and there is still) making the music I needed, I would have never tried to do the dirty job myself.

2. Tell me something about your living environment and the musical education.
I’m basically a self-taught creative, still feeling amateurish (I love that feeling, even when listening to other artists). I can’t read music, I can’t even write that. I was too worried that studying music as a pro would have stolen my naiveté.

3.Is making music your profession? What is the context in which you practice music nowadays?
It’s quite hard making it a real profession, because of italian music industry disbelief. But a contract with a young and promising German label, Mode2 Recordings (for which I create remixes and original tunes), ghostwritten music and occasional arrangements and production for other artists help me to pay the bills and the food and the movies. Anyway, money is not that big problem, you know, when you need ‘em you find ‘em.

4. How do you compose or create music or sound? Have you certain principles, use certain styles etc?
I write music as if I was shooting the storyboard of an unborn movie.

5. Tell me something about the instruments, technical equipment or tools you use?
Basically, it’s me and my pc (and a lot of good freeware plugins, the proof that the best things in life are often free.). Besides, I don’t really trust eating that apple, you know… My electronica was defined “cheap”, guess why?

6. What are the chances of New Media for the music production in general and you personally?
In Italy we say “Libera circolazione delle idee”, the free streaming of ideas and concepts, let’s say freedom. Besides, I’ve found a lot of unknown and quite genial artists thru the net.

7. How about producing and financing your musical productions?
I have this concept (the music is already available at
bodyshock.altervista.org) that I need to develop on the visual side, it’s gonna be like a Grand Guignol show, but filled with electronica. For this show I’ll have to start raising funds. So, I wish there were more ways to be helped on fund raising. I think even the New Media could help a lot in this, but I know it’s a long hard road.

8. Do you work individually as a musician/soundartist or in a group or collaborative? If you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
I have experience in both, and what I like most is a mix of these two situations. There are moments when you need to be alone to create, and others where ideas wouldn’t surface if you were alone.
Anyway, I wish music could become more like cinema, a collaborative art.

9. Is there any group, composer, style or movement which has a lasting influence on making music?
Philip Glass.

10. What are your future plans or dreams as a soundartist or musician?
Releasing a bunch of electronic tunes via Mode2 Recordings (GREATEST sHIT is on the way…), and creating sound design and music for at least a horror feature film. Then I can rest in peace.
