Interview:10 questions

1. When did you start making music, what is/was your motivation to do it?

I started making music doing cut’n paste using tapes. Later I started using computers mostly for filters and multitrack to sum layers and create nuances of sound.

2. Tell me something about your living environment and the musical education.

I grew up listening the LP collection of my parents, next i started my cd collection starting from heavy metal (as a teen ager) and finishing with experimental music. I have a basic education of music, so I continue today to study music and esthetics.

3. Is making music your profession? What is the context in which you practice music nowadays?

Music is not my profession. I’m a programmer, so i compose and play music in my free time (mostly on week-ends).

4. How do you compose or create music or sound? Have you certain principles, use certain styles etc?

As a principle I love working with few samples (usually less than 5), these samples are filtered and modified several times. In this way I obtain a certain number of samples that can be used in the layers. These times i love working in a completely improvised and real-time environment ’cause i get bored with multitrack editors.

5. Tell me something about the instruments, technical equipment or tools you use?

Actually my tools are iPod, mixer, “damaged” cd players, sw radio, a kaoss pad and a mac. iPod are used to play samples and is connected to the rest of my equiment to achieve a parallel filtering of sound in a real time.

6. What are the chances of New Media for the music production in general
and you personally?

New Media opens new opportunity to create something new. I don’t believe in the concept that everything has been said in art. There’s always space to create something new and New Media helps create this space.

7. How about producing and financing your musical productions?

My music production is basically financed by my day-job as a programmer.

8. Do you work individually as a musician/soundartist or in a group or collaborative?
If you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?

I now work individually and in a collaborative projects. I don’t have a preference because, even if I like the complete control someone have in a solo project, i love the fun and the “glitches” of a true collaborative project.

9. Is there any group, composer, style or movement which has a lasting influence on making music?

Probably free jazz and eai is the lasting influence in my play, and without the music of autechre, nurse with wound and john zorn my music would be very different. I love the idea of play with only a basic idea of what to play. The list of conposer and group i love is probably too long to list here.

10. What are your future plans or dreams as a soundartist or musician?

My current plan is to achieve an almost real time manipulation of sound. I don’t really like sequencers because you get a lack of possibility to improvise witch is essential for my conception of music.
