    Interview: 10 questions

    1. When did you start making music, what is/was your motivation to do it?
    2. Tell me something about your living environment and the musical education.
    3.Is making music your profession? What is the context in which you practice music nowadays?
    4. How do you compose or create music or sound? Have you certain principles, use certain styles etc?
    5. Tell me something about the instruments, technical equipment or tools you use?

    I started making music almost three years ago. I come from a very unique place in the world. A place where music has not always been a constant thread in the fabric of my community’s past and present but it is also a place where many styles of music have been created, and a home to those in the forefront. Rock. Rap. Techno. Iggy. Jack. Ted. Marshall. Ritchie. Carl Craig. Juan. It’s cool. I think I’m very lucky. Although my home is no thriving metropolis it lacks not in culture. I also live on the border of two countries: Canada and the United States. Which has also granted me access to two totally distinct industries since we have twice as much media to serve us here. So music was always around. When I was in high school I started going to Detroit warehouse raves. Many people that I grew up with started producing electronic music others formed bands or other variations of these things. I continued to experiment with different sounds and eventually I started broadcasting a radio show in 2002 that featured any style of music that was totally avant-garde. One day a friend of mine sat down with me and showed me Live 4.0. That was when I started making my own music. However, I started to learn music theory and composition at a very young age and it remained a fundamental study throughout my elementary and secondary education. I never intended to become a professional musician and still don’t. I get a little weak at the idea of a certain destiny without the possibility of unexpected consequences. I’ve never said to myself “ I want to be a Scientist or an Artist”. The idea of planning to be one thing seems boring and it has never been in my character to plan ahead. Therefore I became very comfortable with possibilities of Ableton Live and continue to rely on it in the production of most things I do. I have no set expectation for a project or piece of music. If I have an idea I just try to expand on it instead of mold it. Things influence me. Like things and stuff. I have been working on allot of stuff and sometimes things. But recently it seems to sound a bit like Microhouse. I use whatever I can to produce noise. I experiment allot with Native Instruments software and Ableton Live. Other projects and pieces have been live recordings of any acoustic nature.

    6. What are the chances of New Media for the music production in general
    and you personally?

    I explore New Media artistically through installation and cross-disciplinary processes and production. Real-time processing has expanded the possibilities for my music production and created a new kind of format for its presentation. I choose to use Pure Data over Max MSP. I have found that the both accomplish the same ends.

    7. How about producing and financing your musical productions?

    I am an independent artist, and a student. Whatever I have usually goes into producing someone kind of project.

    8. Do you work individually as a musician/soundartist or in a group or collaborative? If you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?

    I have collaborated on a few projects. But it is my nature to work alone. However, there are a few sound/new media collectives recently formed in my community. I generally join them to exchange information and workshop. Recently we held a Reaktor 5 workshop.

    9. Is there any group, composer, style or movement which has a lasting influence on making music?

    Like I said I am really fortunate and have been born into a place in the world where music has always been a constant and every changing thing. It’s really difficult to name my influences or any particular person I have learned from. I love music and I listen to all kinds. Currently I am really into all variations of Metal, and my favourite contemporary composers are Will Oldham, Aaron Funk, Otto von Shirach and Carsten Aermes.

    10. What are your future plans or dreams as a soundartist or musician?

    I’d like to keep creating music and soundprojects.
