Interview: 10 questions

1. When did you start making music, what is/was your motivation to do it?
I started at age of 10, studying violin. About the motivation, not a lot to say: music was what I wanted to do. And it still is.

2. Tell me something about your living environment and the musical education.
My wife is pianist and harpsichordist, and my son is studying piano. We are a family of musicians.
I had an accademic education, and I am graduated in violin, composition, choir direction and electronic music.

3.Is making music your profession? What is the context in which you practice music nowadays?
I’m a musician, and as a musician I spend my time composing, playing, studying and teaching music. In my opinion making music is not only producing it.
I am a teacher too. I teach harmony, musical analysis and computer music at the Conservatory of Lucca (Italy). I live by teaching but this is not the only reason for which I am a teacher. I love to do it, and when I teach I make music: I am not producing music, but I’m working with it.

4. How do you compose or create music or sound? Have you certain principles, use certain styles etc?
No difference for me between creating music or sound. A sound needs a structure, its own structure. I look for that sound and for its own structure. A sound without a structure is not music (as a structure without sounds is not…).

5. Tell me something about the instruments, technical equipment or tools you use?
I use a mac computer, my favourite software is max/msp. This is the heart of my studio, other devices are not so important.

6. What are the chances of New Media for the music production in general
and you personally?

New Media are very important: a community of electronic music composers is grown up on the net, and this is great for electronic music.
And New Media are cheap and we all know that our kind of music in not a business.

7. How about producing and financing your musical productions?
It’s a pity that in Italy it’s very hard to create big musical productions, there isn’t money. I have several projects of musical theatre, but I cannot finance them by myself: I’m not rich.

8. Do you work individually as a musician/soundartist or in a group or collaborative?
If you have experience in both, what is the difference, what do you prefer?
I would like to work in a group, but I haven’t had any good occasion. At the moment it is one of my wishes.

9. Is there any group, composer, style or movement which has a lasting influence on making music?
Music history as a whole has influenced me: we all are sons of it.

10. What are your future plans or dreams as a soundartist or musician?
I plan to keep making music.
